ISTANBUL, TURKEY

The challenges posed by climate change in Istanbul are extreme events especially drought and short but severe periods of rainfall resulting in floods. These challenges are added to the water related problems caused by an increase in population and in water consuming industrial activities in the region. Istanbul needs to reduce water losses and reuse treated wastewater in order to achieve efficient urban water management. The development of innovative water resources is needed to cope with population increase, economic development and adverse impacts of climate change. Rainwater and grey water are regarded as alternative water resource for Istanbul and other regions under water stress. A concept for rainwater harvesting and grey water management is tested and demonstrated in a case study area Kurbaglidere region in Istanbul. The knowledge generated will be applied by other city utilities.
